How to Extend Washing Machine Lifespan

A washing machine that's well cared for can last 15+ years. One that's neglected may fail in 7–8. The difference comes down to a handful of simple habits that take minutes per month. Here's everything you need to do to get the most out of your washer.

1. Clean the Drum Monthly

Detergent residue, fabric softener, hard water minerals, and organic matter build up inside the drum, pump, valves, and hoses over time. This buildup causes odors, reduces washing effectiveness, and can damage internal components.

2. Don't Overload the Machine

Fill the drum to about 80% capacity — clothes need room to tumble and rinse properly. A good test: you should be able to fit your hand flat on top of the laundry in a top-loader.

3. Use the Right Detergent in the Right Amount

• HE machines require HE detergent. Regular detergent creates excess suds that the machine can't rinse out, leaving residue that causes odors and can damage the pump.
• Use the correct amount. More detergent doesn't mean cleaner clothes — it means more residue. Follow the dosing instructions on the detergent packaging.
• Skip fabric softener in front-loaders if possible — it coats the drum seal and can cause mold growth over time.

4. Leave the Door Open After Each Wash

Front-load washers are particularly prone to mold and mildew growth around the door seal because the rubber gasket traps moisture. After every wash, leave the door ajar for at least an hour to allow the drum and seal to dry. Wipe the door seal dry with a cloth if you notice moisture pooling in the folds.

5. Keep the Machine Level

An unlevel washing machine vibrates excessively during the spin cycle, wearing out the bearings, suspension springs, and drum over time. Check that all four feet are in firm contact with the floor and that the machine doesn't rock. See our guide on how to level a washing machine.

Anti-vibration pads also help — they absorb vibration, reduce noise, and prevent the machine from walking across the floor during high-speed spins.

6. Check and Replace Hoses Every 5 Years

The rubber inlet hoses that connect your washer to the water supply degrade over time. A burst hose can cause significant water damage. Inspect hoses annually for cracks, bulges, or corrosion at the fittings. Replace every 5 years as a precaution, or immediately if you see any damage. Consider upgrading to braided stainless steel hoses — they're far more durable than standard rubber.

7. Clean the Filter Regularly

Most front-load washers have a pump filter (usually behind a small panel at the bottom front of the machine) that catches lint, coins, and debris. A clogged filter reduces drainage efficiency and can cause error codes. Clean it every 3–6 months.

8. Clean the Detergent Drawer

Detergent and fabric softener residue builds up in the drawer and can block the water jets that rinse it. Remove the drawer monthly and rinse under warm water. Use an old toothbrush to clean the housing.

9. Run Hot Cycles Occasionally

If you mostly wash on cold (which is fine for most laundry), run a hot cycle once a month — with or without laundry — to flush out residue and kill bacteria in the drum and hoses. Combine with a cleaning tablet for best results.

10. Don't Let Wet Laundry Sit

Leaving wet laundry in the drum for hours after the cycle ends promotes mold growth in the drum and on the door seal. Transfer laundry to the dryer or drying rack promptly after the cycle finishes.
