How to Level Washing Machine

How to Level Washing Machine

An unlevel washing machine vibrates excessively, walks across the floor, makes loud banging noises during the spin cycle, and wears out its bearings and suspension much faster than a properly leveled one. Leveling takes about 15 minutes and makes an immediate difference. Here's how to do it correctly.

Why Leveling Matters

  • Reduces vibration and noise during spin cycles
  • Prevents the machine from "walking" across the floor
  • Extends the life of drum bearings and suspension springs
  • Ensures clothes are washed and spun evenly
  • Prevents water from pooling unevenly in the drum

What You'll Need

  • Spirit level or torpedo level
  • Adjustable wrench or pliers
  • Anti-vibration pads (optional but recommended)

Step 1: Check the Current Level

Place a magnetic torpedo level on top of the washing machine. Check both front-to-back and side-to-side. The bubble should sit centered between the lines in both directions. Note which corners are high and which are low.

Step 2: Locate the Adjustable Feet

All washing machines have adjustable feet at the bottom corners. Most have:

  • Front feet: Fully adjustable by hand or with a wrench
  • Rear feet: On many top-loaders, the rear feet are self-adjusting — tilt the machine forward and set it down and they lock automatically. On front-loaders, all four feet are usually manually adjustable.

Step 3: Adjust the Feet

  1. Tilt the machine slightly to take weight off the foot you're adjusting (have a helper hold it, or use a pry bar)
  2. Turn the foot clockwise to raise that corner, counterclockwise to lower it
  3. Each full turn moves the foot approximately 1/16”
  4. Set the machine down and recheck with the level
  5. Repeat until the bubble is centered in both directions

Step 4: Lock the Feet

Once level, tighten the locking nut on each foot up against the base of the machine. This prevents the feet from vibrating loose over time. Use a wrench to snug them up — don't overtighten.

Step 5: Add Anti-Vibration Pads (Recommended)

Even a perfectly leveled machine will vibrate during high-speed spins. Anti-vibration pads absorb this vibration, reduce noise, and prevent the machine from creeping across the floor.

The Anti-Vibration Pads for Washing Machine (4-Pack + Level) feature a tank-tread grip pattern that locks the machine in place, fit most round feet up to 1.75", and come with a level included — everything you need in one kit. They work for both washers and dryers.

Step 6: Test

Run a spin cycle and observe. The machine should stay in place with minimal vibration. If it still walks or vibrates heavily:

  • Recheck the level — vibration can shift the feet slightly
  • Check that the locking nuts are tight
  • Ensure the load is balanced — a single heavy item (like a wet towel) can cause imbalance regardless of leveling
  • Check that transit bolts have been removed (new machines only)

Tips for Specific Floor Types

  • Tile or hardwood: Anti-vibration pads are especially important — hard floors transmit vibration throughout the house
  • Uneven concrete: You may need to shim under the pads if the floor itself is significantly uneven
  • Raised platforms: Ensure the platform is structurally sound and level before placing the machine on it

Leveling a washing machine is one of the simplest maintenance tasks with one of the biggest impacts on noise, performance, and longevity. Do it when you first install the machine and recheck annually.
