How to Change Car Oil Without a Lift
Share
You Don't Need a Lift to Change Your Oil
Professional shops use hydraulic lifts, but the vast majority of home oil changes are done without one. With the right approach, you can safely access your drain plug and oil filter from the ground or with minimal elevation.
Option 1: Drive-Up Ramps (Easiest)
Vehicle ramps are the safest and most convenient way to raise your car without a lift. Drive the front wheels onto the ramps, engage the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels. Ramps give you 6–8 inches of clearance — enough for most vehicles. They're stable, quick to set up, and don't require a jack.
Option 2: Floor Jack with Jack Stands
If ramps don't give enough clearance or you don't have them, use a floor jack to raise the vehicle and immediately support it with jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack — always use stands. Place stands at the manufacturer's specified jack points (check your owner's manual).
Option 3: Work from the Ground (Some Vehicles)
Many SUVs, trucks, and crossovers have enough ground clearance to access the drain plug and filter without any elevation. Check your vehicle's clearance before purchasing ramps — you may not need them at all.
The Oil Change Process Without a Lift
Step 1: Gather Your Tools
- Oil drain pan — low-profile design fits under vehicles with limited clearance
- Oil filter wrench set — 9" and 12" adjustable pliers for tight spaces
- Oil funnel — for adding new oil cleanly
- Socket wrench, new oil, new filter, gloves, rags, flashlight
Step 2: Raise and Secure the Vehicle
Use ramps or a jack with stands. Engage the parking brake. Chock the wheels that remain on the ground. Confirm the vehicle is stable before sliding underneath.
Step 3: Drain the Oil
Slide the drain pan under the plug. The low-profile design is specifically useful for vehicles with limited ground clearance. Remove the drain plug and allow oil to drain completely.
Step 4: Replace the Filter
Use the WORKPRO filter wrench to remove the old filter. In tight spaces without a lift, the adjustable plier design gives you better grip and leverage than a traditional cup-style wrench. Install the new filter hand-tight plus ¾ turn.
Step 5: Reinstall Plug, Add Oil, Check
Reinstall the drain plug, add new oil through the filler cap using the funnel, start the engine, check for leaks, and verify the oil level with the dipstick.
Safety Rules for Working Without a Lift
- Always use jack stands — never rely on a floor jack alone
- Work on flat, solid ground only
- Engage the parking brake and chock wheels
- Never start the engine while under the vehicle
- Have someone nearby when working under a raised vehicle
Final Thoughts
Changing oil without a lift is completely safe and practical. Ramps are the easiest solution for most vehicles. Combined with a low-profile drain pan, adjustable filter wrench, and funnel, you have everything needed for a clean, safe oil change at home.
