Step-by-Step Oil Change Guide
A complete oil change takes about 30 minutes with the right tools. Here's the full process from start to finish.
Tools and Materials
- Correct engine oil (type and quantity per owner's manual)
- New oil filter
- Oil drain pan
- Oil filter wrench set
- Oil funnel
- Socket wrench with correct drain plug socket
- Gloves, rags, and a flashlight
The Complete Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Check Your Owner's Manual
Confirm the correct oil type (e.g., 5W-30 synthetic), quantity (usually 4–6 quarts), and oil filter part number for your specific vehicle before purchasing anything.
Step 2: Warm the Engine
Run the engine for 2–3 minutes. Warm oil flows and drains more completely than cold oil. Turn off and let sit for 5 minutes before working — hot oil causes burns.
Step 3: Raise the Vehicle if Necessary
Use ramps or a jack with jack stands if needed for clearance. Engage the parking brake and chock the wheels. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a floor jack.
Step 4: Position the Drain Pan
Slide the Capri Tools oil drain pan directly under the drain plug. The wide, low-profile design catches oil efficiently even if the stream angles unexpectedly. Anti-freeze resistant construction handles all automotive fluids.
Step 5: Remove the Drain Plug
Use a socket wrench to loosen the drain plug counterclockwise. Once loose, remove by hand — keep your hand to the side as oil will flow immediately. Allow to drain 5–10 minutes until reduced to a slow drip.
Step 6: Remove the Old Oil Filter
Reposition the drain pan under the filter. Use the WORKPRO oil filter wrench — the 9" or 12" adjustable pliers fit most car and truck filters — to loosen counterclockwise. Remove by hand and allow residual oil to drain into the pan.
Step 7: Prepare and Install the New Filter
Apply a thin film of fresh oil to the new filter's rubber gasket with your finger. This ensures a proper seal and makes future removal easier. Thread on by hand until the gasket contacts the engine, then tighten ¾ of a turn. Do not use a wrench to tighten.
Step 8: Reinstall the Drain Plug
Wipe the drain plug and surrounding area clean. Reinstall and tighten firmly with the socket wrench. Snug but not overtightened — overtightening strips threads and causes leaks.
Step 9: Add New Oil
Remove the oil filler cap on top of the engine. Insert an oil funnel to prevent spills. Pour in the specified quantity of new oil. The 4-pack funnel set includes multiple sizes for a clean, precise pour.
Step 10: Start and Inspect
Replace the filler cap. Start the engine and let run for 1–2 minutes. Watch the oil pressure warning light — it should go off within seconds. Check under the vehicle for leaks at the drain plug and filter. Turn off, wait 5 minutes, check the dipstick and top up if needed.
Step 11: Dispose of Old Oil
Pour used oil from the drain pan into a sealed container. Take to any auto parts store for free recycling. Never dispose of oil in the trash or down a drain.
Final Thoughts
An oil change is one of the simplest and most valuable DIY car maintenance tasks. The three essential tools are a drain pan, oil filter wrench, and funnel — with these, the process is clean, straightforward, and repeatable.
