Fish are entirely dependent on their water environment. Unlike land animals, fish breathe, regulate their body chemistry, and absorb minerals directly through the water around them. The Key Water Parameters for Fish

1. Ammonia (NH3) — Target: 0 ppm

Ammonia is produced by fish waste, uneaten food, and decaying plant matter. It's highly toxic even at low concentrations. In a healthy, cycled tank, ammonia should always read zero. Any detectable ammonia requires immediate action — a water change and investigation of the cause.

2. Nitrite (NO2) — Target: 0 ppm

Nitrite is produced when beneficial bacteria break down ammonia. Like ammonia, nitrite is toxic to fish and should always be zero in an established tank. Elevated nitrite indicates an incomplete cycle or a disrupted bacterial colony.

3. Nitrate (NO3) — Target: Below 40 ppm

Nitrate is the end product of the nitrogen cycle and is far less toxic than ammonia or nitrite. However, high nitrate levels (above 40 ppm) cause chronic stress and weaken immune systems. Regular water changes keep nitrate in check.

4. pH — Target: 6.5–7.5 for most freshwater fish

GH (General Hardness) measures dissolved calcium and magnesium. Most freshwater fish prefer soft to moderately hard water (4–12 dGH). KH (Carbonate Hardness) measures the water's buffering capacity — its ability to resist pH swings. A KH of 4–8 dKH is ideal for most community tanks.

6. Temperature — Target: 74–80°F for tropical fish

Temperature affects metabolism, immune function, and oxygen levels. Tropical fish generally need 74–80°F, while coldwater fish like goldfish prefer 65–72°F. Sudden temperature changes of more than 2°F can shock fish.

7. Dissolved Oxygen

Fish need oxygen dissolved in the water to breathe. Good surface agitation from your filter or an air pump keeps oxygen levels adequate. Signs of low oxygen include fish gasping at the surface.

8. Chlorine and Chloramine — Target: 0 ppm
