What to Do If Your Dog Is Bleeding Heavily

What to Do If Your Dog Is Bleeding Heavily

Heavy Bleeding Is Always an Emergency

Significant blood loss can cause shock and death within minutes. Control bleeding immediately while someone calls the emergency vet or while you prepare to transport your dog.

Step 1: Apply Direct Pressure

This is the most important step. Place a clean cloth, gauze pad, or any available fabric directly over the wound and press firmly. Do not remove the cloth — if it soaks through, add more on top. Maintain firm, continuous pressure for at least 5 to 10 minutes without lifting to check.

🧰 Recommended: EVERLIT Pet Medic First Aid Kit (95 Pcs) — Includes gauze pads, bandaging, and wound care supplies. Keep one at home and one in the car.

Step 2: Elevate If Possible

If the wound is on a limb and elevation doesn't cause pain, raise the limb above the level of the heart to slow blood flow.

Step 3: Apply a Pressure Bandage

Once bleeding slows, wrap the wound firmly with a bandage to maintain pressure during transport. Not so tight that it cuts off circulation — you should be able to slip two fingers under the bandage.

Step 4: Tourniquet (Last Resort Only)

A tourniquet is only appropriate for life-threatening bleeding from a limb that cannot be controlled with direct pressure. Apply 2 to 3 inches above the wound, tighten until bleeding stops, and note the time. Tourniquets cause tissue damage and must be released by a vet as soon as possible.

Step 5: Treat for Shock

Signs of shock: pale gums, rapid weak pulse, cold extremities, weakness. Keep your dog warm and calm. Get to the emergency vet immediately.

Step 6: Go to the Emergency Vet

All significant bleeding wounds require veterinary care. Internal injuries, infection, and the need for sutures or surgery cannot be assessed at home.

Styptic Powder for Minor Bleeding

For minor bleeding such as a broken nail or small cut, styptic powder stops bleeding quickly.

🧰 Recommended: Top Performance MediStyp Pet Styptic Powder — Contains benzocaine for pain relief. Stops minor bleeding from nail trims and small cuts. 1.5 oz.
