Safe Rewarming Methods
- Move indoors to a warm, draft-free room immediately
- Dry the coat completely with warm towels or a hair dryer on low warm setting
- Wrap in blankets warmed in the dryer
- Place warm water bottles wrapped in towels against the chest and abdomen
- Use body heat by holding your dog against you under a blanket
- Offer warm water or low-sodium broth in small amounts if conscious and able to swallow
What NOT to Do
- No heating pads directly on skin
- No very hot water bottles
- No vigorous rubbing of extremities
- Do not warm the legs before the core
When to Go to the Emergency Vet
- Shivering stops but dog is still cold and weak
- Unconsciousness or unresponsiveness
- Slow or irregular breathing
- No improvement after 30 minutes of warming
- Temperature below 95F (35C)
