How to Warm Up a Cold Dog

Safe Rewarming Methods

1. Move indoors to a warm, draft-free room immediately
2. Dry the coat completely with warm towels or a hair dryer on low warm setting
3. Wrap in blankets warmed in the dryer
4. Place warm water bottles wrapped in towels against the chest and abdomen
5. Use body heat by holding your dog against you under a blanket
6. Offer warm water or low-sodium broth in small amounts if conscious and able to swallow

What NOT to Do

• No heating pads directly on skin
• No very hot water bottles
• No vigorous rubbing of extremities
• Do not warm the legs before the core

When to Go to the Emergency Vet

• Shivering stops but dog is still cold and weak
• Unconsciousness or unresponsiveness
• Slow or irregular breathing
• No improvement after 30 minutes of warming
• Temperature below 95F (35C)
