How to Treat Dog Diarrhea at Home

How to Treat Dog Diarrhea at Home

Can You Treat Dog Diarrhea at Home?

Yes — mild, uncomplicated diarrhea in an otherwise healthy adult dog can often be managed at home. Most cases resolve within 24–48 hours with the right approach. However, diarrhea with blood, severe lethargy, vomiting, or lasting more than 48 hours requires veterinary attention.

Step 1: Assess the Severity

Before treating at home, check for red flags:

  • 🚨 Go to the vet immediately if: blood in stool (red or black/tarry), severe lethargy or collapse, suspected poisoning, known foreign body ingestion, puppy or senior dog, or diarrhea lasting more than 48 hours
  • Safe to treat at home if: single adult dog, mild loose stool, still alert and drinking, no blood, no vomiting

Step 2: Withhold Food for 12 Hours (Adults Only)

For adult dogs, withholding food for 12 hours gives the gut a chance to rest and reset. Do not fast puppies, senior dogs, or small breeds — they can develop low blood sugar. Always keep fresh water available.

Step 3: Transition to a Bland Diet

After fasting, introduce a bland diet for 2–3 days. The classic combination is:

  • Boiled white rice (plain, no seasoning) — 2/3 of the meal
  • Boiled chicken breast (skinless, boneless, plain) — 1/3 of the meal

Feed small amounts every 4–6 hours rather than one large meal. See our full guide on what to feed a dog with diarrhea for more options.

Step 4: Add a Probiotic

Probiotics help restore healthy gut bacteria, which diarrhea disrupts. A dog-specific probiotic can significantly shorten recovery time.

🥛 Recommended: Royal Canin Probiotics for Dogs — Digestive and immune health powder supplement for dogs of all ages. Easy to mix into food. 30-count individual sachets.

Step 5: Add Pumpkin for Fiber

Plain canned pumpkin (not pie filling) or pumpkin powder is a natural source of soluble fiber that helps firm up loose stools. Give 1–4 teaspoons depending on dog size, mixed into food.

🎃 Recommended: Pumpkin Powder for Dogs — Fiber blend with pumpkin, pumpkin seed, and apple. Supports firm stool and gut health. 60 scoops per container.

Step 6: Gradually Return to Normal Food

Once stools are firming up (usually after 2–3 days on bland diet), slowly mix in your dog's regular food over 3–4 days: start with 75% bland / 25% regular, then 50/50, then 25/75, then back to normal.

What Causes Dog Diarrhea?

  • Dietary indiscretion (eating something they shouldn't)
  • Sudden food change
  • Food intolerance or allergy
  • Intestinal parasites
  • Bacterial or viral infection
  • Stress or anxiety
  • Medications (especially antibiotics)
  • Inflammatory bowel disease

When to Call the Vet

  • Blood in stool (bright red or black/tarry)
  • Diarrhea lasting more than 48 hours
  • Accompanied by vomiting, fever, or lethargy
  • Puppy, senior dog, or immunocompromised dog
  • Suspected poisoning or foreign body ingestion
  • Signs of dehydration (dry gums, skin tenting, sunken eyes)
