How to Treat Dog Constipation at Home

Is Your Dog Constipated?

A healthy dog typically has one to two bowel movements per day. Constipation means straining to defecate, producing little or no stool, or going more than 48 hours without a bowel movement. Mild constipation is common and often resolves with simple home remedies.

• Straining or squatting without producing stool
• Producing small, hard, dry stools
• Crying or whimpering while trying to defecate

Home Remedies for Dog Constipation

1. Increase Water Intake

Dehydration is one of the most common causes of constipation. Make sure fresh water is always available. You can also add a small amount of low-sodium chicken broth to water to encourage drinking.
