How to Transport an Injured Dog Safely

How to Transport an Injured Dog Safely

Why Safe Transport Matters

Incorrect handling of an injured dog can worsen fractures, cause spinal injury, increase bleeding, or deepen shock. Taking 60 seconds to transport correctly can prevent additional harm.

Step 1: Muzzle If Necessary

A dog in pain may bite even their most trusted owner. If your dog is snapping or growling, apply a makeshift muzzle using a strip of cloth, a leash, or a tie. Loop around the muzzle, tie under the chin, then behind the ears. Do not muzzle an unconscious dog or a dog with breathing difficulty.

Step 2: Minimize Movement

Move your dog as little as possible. If spinal injury is suspected (hit by car, fall from height), keep the spine straight and move as a rigid unit. Do not allow the head, neck, or back to twist or bend.

Step 3: Use a Stretcher for Large Dogs

For large or heavy dogs, a stretcher prevents you from having to lift and carry in a way that twists the spine or limbs.

🚑 Recommended: Heavy Duty 264LBS Large Dog Stretcher — Foldable pet transport stretcher with noiseless wheels. 45x22 inches. Supports up to 264 lbs. For injured and senior dogs.

Step 4: Improvised Stretcher

If no stretcher is available, slide your dog onto a rigid surface: a wooden board, a car floor mat, a jacket stretched between two people, or a blanket held taut by two people at each end. Move as a unit, keeping the spine straight.

Step 5: Secure in the Vehicle

Place your dog on the back seat or cargo area on their side. Have a helper hold them if possible. If alone, place them in a position where they cannot roll or fall. Keep the car warm.

Step 6: Call Ahead

Call the emergency vet while someone else drives, or pull over to call before driving. Give them your ETA and a brief description of the injury so they can prepare.

During Transport

  • Keep your dog warm with a blanket
  • Speak calmly and reassuringly
  • Monitor breathing
  • Drive safely — arriving in one piece matters
