How to Groom Your Dog at Home
Share
Professional grooming costs $50–$150 per session — and most dogs need it every 4–8 weeks. Learning to groom your dog at home saves money, strengthens your bond, and keeps your dog looking and feeling great between professional appointments. Here's how to do it right.
What Home Grooming Covers
- Brushing and detangling the coat
- Bathing and drying
- Trimming fur around the eyes, ears, paws, and sanitary areas
- Nail trimming
- Ear cleaning
- Teeth brushing
Essential Tools for Home Grooming
- Slicker brush: Swihauk Self-Cleaning Slicker Brush for daily brushing and detangling
- Grooming scissors: GLADOG 5-in-1 Professional Grooming Scissors Set — includes straight, curved, and thinning shears with safety round tips
- Clippers: oneisall Low-Noise Cordless Dog Clipper Kit for body trimming
- Nail clippers: Candure Dog Nail Clippers with Safety Guard
- Dog dryer: Jellyfish Handheld Dog Dryer
Step-by-Step: Full Home Grooming Session
Step 1: Brush Before Bathing
Always brush out tangles and mats before getting the coat wet — water tightens mats and makes them much harder to remove. Work section by section from the skin outward.
Step 2: Bathe
Use a dog-specific shampoo appropriate for your dog's coat type. Rinse thoroughly — residue causes itching and dullness.
Step 3: Dry Completely
Towel dry first, then use the Jellyfish dryer on a low heat setting. Never leave the coat damp — especially in skin folds or thick undercoats.
Step 4: Brush Again
Brush the coat while slightly damp for the smoothest finish. This is the best time to detangle and fluff the coat before trimming.
Step 5: Trim
Use the GLADOG scissors for detail work around the face, ears, paws, and sanitary areas. Use the oneisall clippers for body trimming on longer-coated breeds. Always cut in the direction of hair growth.
Step 6: Nails
Trim nails with the Candure clippers. Trim small amounts at a time to avoid cutting the quick. Keep styptic powder nearby.
Step 7: Ears and Teeth
Finish with ear cleaning and teeth brushing to complete the full grooming routine.
How Often to Groom at Home
- Brushing: 2–3x per week (daily for long-coated breeds)
- Full grooming session: Every 4–8 weeks depending on breed
- Nails: Every 3–4 weeks
Final Thoughts
Home grooming takes practice — your first few sessions will be slower and messier than a professional's. But with the right tools and a calm, consistent approach, most dog owners can handle the majority of their dog's grooming needs at home.
