Why Gum Color Is a Critical Vital Sign

Your dog's gums are a window into their circulatory system. Gum color reflects blood oxygen levels, circulation, and organ function. Checking gum color takes five seconds and requires no equipment — making it one of the most powerful at-home health checks you can do.

How to Check Your Dog's Gum Color

Approach your dog calmly. Gently lift the upper lip to expose the gums above the front teeth.
Look at the color of the gum tissue itself — not the teeth.
Do the capillary refill test (CRT): Press your finger firmly on the gum for 2 seconds, then release. The white spot should return to pink within 1–2 seconds. Slower than 2 seconds = poor circulation.
Note the moisture level: Healthy gums are moist and slightly slippery. Dry or tacky gums indicate dehydration.

The Capillary Refill Time (CRT) Test

CRT measures how quickly blood returns to the gums after pressure is applied:

1–2 seconds: ✅ Normal
2–3 seconds: Slow — possible dehydration or poor circulation
Over 3 seconds: Serious circulatory problem — emergency

How Often Should You Check Gum Color?

For healthy dogs, checking gum color monthly as part of a routine health check is sufficient. For dogs with known heart disease, anemia, or other conditions, check weekly or as directed by your vet. Always check immediately if your dog seems unwell, lethargic, or is breathing abnormally.

What If My Dog Won't Let Me Check Their Gums?

Practice regularly when your dog is healthy and relaxed. Pair gum checks with treats so your dog associates it with something positive. If your dog is in distress and won't allow a gum check, that itself is a sign to seek veterinary care.

When to Go to the Vet Immediately

Go to an emergency vet right away if gums are:

Blue, purple, or gray
White or very pale
Bright red all over
Dry and tacky with CRT over 3 seconds
