Can Dogs Eat Raw Fish

Can Dogs Eat Raw Fish

The Short Answer: Not Recommended — Raw Fish Carries Serious Risks

Raw fish is not recommended for dogs. While cooked fish is safe and nutritious, raw fish carries several serious risks including parasites, bacteria, and in the case of Pacific salmon and trout, a potentially fatal condition called Salmon Poisoning Disease. Some raw fish also contain thiaminase, an enzyme that destroys vitamin B1. Cooked fish delivers all the nutritional benefits without these risks.

Risks of Raw Fish for Dogs

1. Salmon Poisoning Disease — Potentially Fatal

Raw Pacific salmon, trout, and steelhead can carry Neorickettsia helminthoeca, transmitted by a fluke parasite. Dogs who eat infected raw fish can develop Salmon Poisoning Disease (SPD), which is potentially fatal if untreated. Symptoms appear within 6–10 days:

  • Vomiting and diarrhea (often bloody)
  • Fever and lethargy
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Loss of appetite and dehydration

SPD is treatable with antibiotics if caught early but has a high fatality rate if untreated. Never give your dog raw Pacific salmon or trout.

2. Parasites

Raw fish can harbor flukes, tapeworms, and roundworms that infect dogs and cause digestive problems and weight loss. Freezing at −20°C for at least 7 days kills most parasites.

3. Bacteria — Salmonella and Listeria

Raw fish can carry Salmonella and Listeria. Dogs are generally more resistant than humans but are not immune — particularly puppies, elderly dogs, and immunocompromised dogs.

4. Thiaminase — Vitamin B1 Deficiency

Many raw fish species contain thiaminase, an enzyme that destroys thiamine (vitamin B1). Regular consumption can cause thiamine deficiency, leading to neurological symptoms including loss of coordination and seizures. Cooking destroys thiaminase.

The Bottom Line

Raw fish is not recommended for dogs. Salmon Poisoning Disease from raw Pacific salmon is potentially fatal, parasites and bacteria pose real health risks, and thiaminase can cause vitamin B1 deficiency. Canned sardines, salmon, and mackerel in water with no added salt deliver all the nutritional benefits safely.
