Can Dogs Eat Feta Cheese
Share
The Short Answer: Not Recommended — Feta Is Very High in Sodium
Feta cheese is not recommended for dogs. While it is not acutely toxic in tiny amounts, feta is one of the saltiest cheeses available and is also high in fat and lactose. The combination of very high sodium, significant fat, and high lactose makes feta one of the least suitable cheeses for dogs. A tiny crumble occasionally is unlikely to cause serious harm in a healthy large dog, but feta should never be given as a regular treat.
Why Feta Is Not Good for Dogs
1. Very High Sodium
Feta is traditionally brined in salt water, making it one of the highest-sodium cheeses available. A single ounce of feta can contain 300–400 mg of sodium — a significant portion of a small dog's daily safe limit. Excess sodium causes increased thirst, urination, dehydration, and in larger amounts, sodium ion poisoning.
2. High Fat
Feta is high in fat, raising pancreatitis risk with regular or large-amount feeding.
3. High Lactose
Feta is a fresh, brined cheese with relatively high lactose content. Dogs with lactose intolerance are likely to experience gas, bloating, and diarrhea from feta.
4. Feta in Salads and Dishes
Feta is commonly served in Greek salads with olives, onion, and oregano, or in dishes with garlic. Never give your dog feta that has been part of a prepared dish — the accompanying ingredients are often harmful or toxic to dogs.
What If My Dog Ate Feta?
A tiny crumble of plain feta is unlikely to cause serious harm in a healthy large dog. Ensure access to fresh water. Monitor for vomiting, diarrhea, or excessive thirst. If your dog ate a significant amount, contact your veterinarian.

The Bottom Line
Feta cheese is not recommended for dogs. Very high sodium, significant fat, and high lactose make it one of the least suitable cheeses for dogs. A tiny crumble of plain feta occasionally is unlikely to cause serious harm, but there are far better cheese options. Choose lower-sodium cheeses or dog-specific lactose-free cheese treats instead.
