Why Does Shower Drain Gurgle

Why Does My Shower Drain Gurgle?
A gurgling shower drain is one of the most common bathroom plumbing complaints. That bubbling sound happens when air is being pushed back up through the drain — almost always because something is restricting water flow. Here's what's causing it and how to fix it.
Cause 1: Hair Clog (Most Common)
Hair is the #1 cause of shower drain gurgling. A partial hair clog restricts water flow and creates negative pressure that pulls air back up through the drain as water passes through.
How to tell: Water drains slowly AND gurgles. The gurgling happens while the shower is running or right after.
Fix:
- Remove the drain cover
- Pull out the hair clog with a Flexisnake Drain Weasel or plastic drain snake
- Flush with hot water
- Install a TubShroom Ultra to prevent future hair clogs
Cause 2: Soap Scum Buildup
Soap scum accumulates on pipe walls over time, narrowing the pipe and causing the same gurgling effect as a hair clog.
Fix: Pour Green Gobbler Drain Clog Dissolver into the drain, let sit 30 minutes to overnight, flush with hot water. The enzyme formula breaks down soap scum buildup.
Cause 3: Blocked Vent Pipe
If the drain vent pipe on your roof is blocked, air can't enter the system properly and gets pulled through the shower drain water instead.
How to tell: The shower drain gurgles even when draining well. Other drains in the house also gurgle. The gurgling happens randomly.
Fix: The vent pipe needs to be cleared from the roof — usually a job for a plumber.
Cause 4: Main Sewer Line Partial Clog
If the main sewer line is partially blocked, water from the shower can't drain freely and pushes air back through the drain.
How to tell: Multiple drains are slow or gurgling. Toilet gurgles when shower runs.
Fix: Try clearing the main line through the cleanout with a 25ft Drain Auger. If that doesn't resolve it, call a plumber.
Quick Diagnosis
| Symptom | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Slow drain + gurgling | Hair or soap scum clog | Drain snake + enzyme cleaner |
| Good drainage + gurgling | Blocked vent pipe | Call a plumber |
| Multiple drains gurgling | Main line or vent issue | Auger main line or call plumber |
Bottom Line
Most gurgling shower drains are caused by a hair clog — pull it out with a Flexisnake and the gurgling stops. If the drain flows well but still gurgles, the issue is the vent pipe and you'll need a plumber.
