Where Is the Main Water Shut Off Valve?
Knowing where your main water shut-off valve is before an emergency can save you thousands of dollars in water damage. Here's where to find it in any type of home.
Most Common Locations
Basement (Most Common in Cold Climates)
In homes with basements, the main shut-off is almost always in the basement, on the wall facing the street. Look for a pipe coming through the foundation wall with a valve on it.
Crawl Space
In homes with crawl spaces, the shut-off is often near the foundation wall in the crawl space, close to where the water line enters.
Utility Room or Mechanical Room
Many homes have the main shut-off in the utility room near the water heater, furnace, or laundry area.
Garage
In some homes, especially in warmer climates, the main shut-off is in the garage on an interior wall.
Outside the House
In warm climates, the main shut-off may be outside in a box near the foundation, or near the water meter.
Near the Water Meter
There's always a shut-off at or near the water meter. This requires a special tool:
👉 Water meter shut-off key — T-handle tool that fits standard water meter valves. Keep one accessible for emergencies.
How to Identify the Main Shut-Off Valve
- On the largest pipe in the area (the main supply line)
- Located where the water line enters the house from underground
- Either a ball valve (lever handle) or a gate valve (round wheel handle)
How to Close It
- Ball valve: Turn the lever 90° so it's perpendicular to the pipe — closed. Parallel = open.
- Gate valve: Turn clockwise until it stops. May take many full rotations.
What to Do Right Now
- Find your main shut-off valve today — don't wait for an emergency
- Test it — turn it off and back on to make sure it works
- If it's stuck or broken, have a plumber replace it with a ball valve
- Label it clearly: "MAIN WATER SHUT OFF"
- Make sure every adult in the household knows where it is
- Keep a water meter key accessible as a backup
Can't Find It?
- Check your home inspection report
- Ask your water utility
- Look for a pipe coming through the foundation wall and follow it
- Check near the water heater
Bottom Line
Find your main water shut-off valve today and make sure it works. In most homes it's in the basement or utility room near where the water line enters the house. Label it, test it, and make sure everyone in the household knows where it is.
