The anode rod is the most important and most overlooked maintenance part in your water heater. It is a sacrificial metal rod that corrodes instead of the tank - protecting the tank lining from rust and extending its life by years. When the anode rod is depleted, the tank starts corroding. Replacing it every 2-3 years is the single best thing you can do to extend your water heater's life.
What Is an Anode Rod?
An anode rod is a long metal rod - typically magnesium, aluminum, or zinc - threaded into the top of the water heater tank. Through a process called electrolytic action, the rod corrodes preferentially, drawing corrosive elements away from the steel tank lining. As long as the rod has material left, the tank is protected.
Most anode rods last 2-5 years depending on water chemistry and usage. In soft water areas they deplete faster. In hard water areas they may last longer but accumulate scale.

- Hot water smells like rotten eggs or sulfur
- Hot water is rusty or discolored
- The water heater is over 3 years old and the rod has never been checked
- The rod is less than half an inch thick when inspected

How to Replace the Anode Rod: Step by Step
Step 1: Turn Off the Heater
Electric: Turn off the circuit breaker.
Gas: Turn the gas control knob to PILOT.
Step 2: Turn Off the Cold Water Supply
Close the cold water inlet valve at the top of the water heater.
Step 3: Drain 2-3 Gallons from the Tank
Connect a garden hose to the drain valve and drain a few gallons to reduce pressure inside the tank. You do not need to drain the full tank - just enough to reduce pressure and prevent a large water release when the rod is removed.
Step 4: Locate the Anode Rod
The anode rod is usually located at the top of the water heater, either as a standalone hex head fitting or under the plastic cover of the hot water outlet. Check your owner's manual if you cannot find it. The hex head is typically 1-1/16 inches.
Step 5: Remove the Old Anode Rod
Use a 1-1/16 inch socket with a breaker bar or impact wrench to loosen the rod counterclockwise. Anode rods are often very tight - brace the tank to prevent it from moving. Once loose, unscrew by hand and pull the rod straight out.
Inspect the old rod:
- Less than 1/2 inch thick: Depleted - replacement was overdue
- Corroded to the wire core: Severely depleted - tank may have started corroding
- Heavy calcium coating: Hard water scale - rod may still have life but check thickness underneath
- Still mostly intact: Rod has life remaining - reinstall and check again in 1-2 years
Step 6: Install the New Anode Rod
- Wrap the threads of the new rod with 4-6 layers of PTFE tape
- Insert the new rod into the port and thread it in by hand first
- Tighten with a socket wrench until snug - firm but not overtightened
- The rod should be fully seated with no threads showing
Step 7: Refill and Restore Power
- Open the cold water supply valve
- Open a hot water faucet to purge air until water flows steadily
- Close the faucet
- Check around the anode rod port for any leaks
- Restore power or gas to the heater
What If the Anode Rod Is Stuck?
Anode rods can seize in the tank threads over years of inactivity. Try these approaches:
- Apply penetrating oil around the hex head and wait 30 minutes
- Use an impact wrench for more torque
- Brace the tank firmly before applying force - do not let the tank rotate
- If the rod breaks off inside the tank, call a plumber
