How to Transition Between Hardwood Floor and Tile

Hardwood to Tile: The Key Challenge

The main challenge with hardwood-to-tile transitions is height. Tile installations vary significantly in thickness depending on the tile size and mortar bed depth, while hardwood is typically 3/4 inch thick. The height difference between the two surfaces determines which transition profile you need.

Measure the Height Difference First

Use a straightedge across both surfaces at the transition point and measure the height difference. This determines your transition type:

• Same height (within 1/8 inch) - use a T-molding transition
• Hardwood higher than tile (up to 1/2 inch) - use a reducer strip sloping down from hardwood to tile
• Tile higher than hardwood - use a reducer strip sloping down from tile to hardwood, or a threshold

The Right Transition Strip

The Maxiroc Floor Transition Strip handles height differences up to 5mm and works for hardwood-to-tile transitions where the height difference is within that range. For larger height differences, a track-and-cap reducer system provides more flexibility.

Step 1: Plan the Transition Location

The transition strip should sit at the centerline of the doorway - directly under where the door closes. This is the most natural visual break point and protects both flooring types from foot traffic at the junction.

Step 2: Prepare Both Flooring Edges

1. The hardwood edge should be clean and straight - cut with a circular saw and straightedge if needed
2. The tile edge should be fully grouted and cured before installing the transition
3. Leave a 1/4 inch gap between the hardwood edge and the tile edge for the transition strip to bridge

Step 3: Install the Transition Strip

For the Maxiroc self-adhesive strip:

1. Cut to the exact doorway width with a hacksaw or tin snips
2. Clean the subfloor in the gap area thoroughly
3. Peel the backing and press firmly into position, centered over the gap
4. Press along the entire length for 30 seconds
5. Allow 24 hours before heavy foot traffic

Grout Line Alignment (Optional but Professional)

For a truly polished look, align the tile grout lines so the last grout line runs parallel to and close to the transition strip. This requires planning the tile layout from the transition point outward - something to consider before the tile is installed.

Maintaining the Transition

Clean the transition strip with the same products used on the hardwood side. Use Bona Professional Hardwood Floor Cleaner on a cloth for the wood side, and a tile-safe cleaner for the tile side. Check annually for lifting or loosening.
