  • Clean and free of contaminants — no oil, grease, paint, curing compounds, or sealers. These prevent adhesive from bonding.

How to Tile Over Concrete: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Clean the concrete thoroughly.
Sweep and vacuum all dust and debris. Remove any oil stains with a degreaser. Remove any paint or sealers with a chemical stripper or mechanical grinding. The concrete must be bare and clean for the adhesive to bond.

Step 2: Repair cracks and level the surface.
Fill cracks with a concrete crack filler and allow to cure. Fill low spots with self-leveling compound. Grind down high spots. Re-check with a long level until the surface is within tolerance.

Step 3: Apply concrete primer (if required).
Some tile adhesives require a concrete primer to improve adhesion, especially on smooth or dusty concrete. Check your adhesive manufacturer's instructions.

Step 4: Plan your layout.
Snap chalk lines from the center of the room. Dry-lay tiles to check the layout and adjust the starting point to avoid very thin cut tiles at edges.
