How to Set Water Heater Temperature
Share
Setting your water heater to the right temperature affects your safety, energy bills, and hot water quality. Too low and bacteria can grow. Too high and you risk scalding and wasted energy.
What Temperature Should a Water Heater Be Set To?
The U.S. Department of Energy recommends 120 degrees F (49 degrees C) for most households. This kills bacteria, reduces scalding risk, and saves 6-10% on energy compared to 140 degrees F.
How to Set Temperature on an Electric Water Heater
- Turn off the circuit breaker
- Remove the access panel and pull back the insulation
- Use a flathead screwdriver to turn the thermostat dial to 120 degrees F
- Replace insulation and panel
- Repeat for the second thermostat if present
- Turn breaker back on and wait 1-2 hours
- Test temperature at the nearest faucet
EWH-00 Water Heater Thermostat - replace a faulty thermostat that won't hold the correct temperature.
EWH-01 Electric Water Heater Tune-Up Kit - two thermostats and two heating elements for a complete repair.
How to Set Temperature on a Gas Water Heater
- Locate the gas control valve at the front bottom of the heater
- Turn the temperature dial to your desired setting - HOT or B setting is approximately 120 degrees F
- No tools needed - dial turns by hand
- Wait 1-2 hours and test at a faucet
Gas Valve 70000 BTU - replace a faulty gas valve that won't maintain correct temperature.
How to Set Temperature on a Tankless Water Heater
Use the digital control panel on the front of the unit. Press up or down to set to 120 degrees F directly. Check your manual if the unit won't activate at low flow rates.
How to Verify the Actual Temperature
Run hot water for 2-3 minutes at the nearest faucet, fill a glass, and measure immediately with a thermometer. Adjust and recheck after 1-2 hours if needed.
When to Use 140 Degrees F
Use 140 degrees F if someone in your home has a suppressed immune system, or if your dishwasher has no internal heater. At this temperature, scalding can occur in 5 seconds - install anti-scald valves if children are present.
Temperature Quick Reference
| Temperature | Effect |
|---|---|
| Below 120 degrees F | Legionella bacteria risk |
| 120 degrees F | Recommended for most homes |
| 130 degrees F | Kills most bacteria, higher scald risk |
| 140 degrees F | Maximum bacteria kill, serious scald risk |
