Not all tiles need sealing — but many do, and skipping this step can lead to staining, moisture damage, and a floor that's much harder to keep clean. This guide explains which tiles need sealing, which don't, and exactly how to seal tile correctly for lasting protection.

Which Tiles Need Sealing?

Tiles that MUST be sealed:

• Natural stone tiles (marble, travertine, limestone, slate, sandstone) — highly porous and will stain almost immediately without sealing
• Unglazed ceramic and terracotta tiles — porous surface absorbs liquids and stains easily
• Unglazed porcelain tiles — less porous than stone but still benefits from sealing

Tiles that generally DON'T need sealing:

• Glazed ceramic tiles — the glaze is already a non-porous, waterproof surface
• Glazed porcelain tiles — the glaze seals the surface
• Glass tiles — non-porous by nature

How to Seal Tile: Step-by-Step

Step 1: Clean the tile thoroughly.
The tile must be completely clean before sealing. Any dirt or grease sealed under the sealer will be locked in permanently. Use an appropriate cleaner for your tile type and allow to dry fully — at least 24 hours.

Step 2: Test the sealer in a hidden area.
Apply a small amount of AQUA-X sealer in an inconspicuous spot and allow to dry. Confirm it doesn't change the tile color or finish before proceeding.

Step 3: Apply the sealer.
Using a foam applicator pad or clean cloth, apply the sealer in thin, even strokes across the tile surface. Work in sections of 3–4 square feet. Don't over-apply — thin coats absorb better than thick ones.

Step 4: Allow to penetrate.
Let the first coat absorb for 5–10 minutes.

Step 5: Wipe away excess.
Before the sealer dries completely, wipe away any unabsorbed excess with a clean dry cloth. Excess sealer left on the surface can dry to a hazy or sticky film.

Step 6: Apply a second coat.
For porous natural stone tiles, a second coat is strongly recommended. Apply the same way and wipe excess again.

Step 7: Allow to cure.
Keep foot traffic off the sealed surface for at least 2–4 hours. Avoid getting it wet for 24 hours for full cure.
