Why Does Hardwood Floor Lose Its Shine?

Hardwood floors lose their shine for several reasons:

Finish wear — the polyurethane topcoat gradually wears thin in high-traffic areas
Residue buildup — wrong cleaners leave a film that dulls the surface
Micro-scratches — fine scratches from grit and foot traffic scatter light instead of reflecting it
Age — older finishes oxidize and yellow over time

The good news: most dull floors can be restored without sanding or refinishing.

Step 1: Deep Clean First

When Restorer Isn't Enough
