How to Refinish a Bed Frame

A bed frame is the focal point of any bedroom, and a worn or outdated finish can drag down the whole room's look. The good news is that refinishing a bed frame is very achievable as a DIY project — even for large, ornate frames. Here's a complete guide.

What You'll Need

• Chemical stripper: Citristrip Paint & Varnish Stripping Gel

Step 1: Disassemble the Bed Frame

Take the bed frame completely apart — headboard, footboard, side rails, and slats. Working on individual components is far easier than trying to refinish an assembled frame. Label each piece and keep all hardware in a labeled bag.

Step 2: Inspect for Damage

Check all joints, dowels, and connections. Repair any loose joints with Titebond wood glue and clamp until fully cured. This is much easier to do before refinishing.

Step 3: Strip the Old Finish

Apply Citristrip to all surfaces. For large flat panels like the headboard, cover with plastic wrap after applying to keep the stripper moist and active. Let sit 30 minutes to 2 hours, then scrape off. Use a brass brush for carved or turned details.

Step 4: Sand All Components

Use the DEWALT orbital sander on flat panels (headboard face, footboard face, side rails). Use sanding sponges on posts, spindles, and curved details. Work through 80, 120, and 220-grit progressively.

Step 5: Remove All Dust

Vacuum thoroughly, then wipe every surface with a tack cloth. Pay special attention to carved details and joints where dust collects.

Step 6: Apply Your Finish

For a stained finish: Apply Minwax Dark Walnut stain with a foam brush or staining pad. Let penetrate 5–15 minutes, wipe off excess, and allow to dry. Apply a second coat for deeper color. Seal with 2–3 coats of General Finishes Topcoat.

For a painted finish: Apply Heirloom Traditions ALL-IN-ONE Paint in 2 coats using a foam brush for flat areas and a chalk brush for details.

Step 7: Reassemble

Once all pieces are fully cured (at least 48 hours), reassemble the bed frame. Take care not to scratch the fresh finish during assembly — lay a blanket on the floor to protect pieces as you work.
