How to Install a Door Sweep

A door sweep is one of the most effective and affordable home improvements you can make. It seals the gap under the door to block drafts, noise, insects, dust, and light. Installation takes about 15 minutes. Here's how to do it right.

What Is a Door Sweep?

A door sweep is a strip of metal, plastic, or rubber that attaches to the bottom of a door. When the door closes, the sweep brushes or presses against the floor or threshold, sealing the gap underneath.

Types of Door Sweeps

• Screw-on sweep: Attaches to the door face with screws; most common and durable
• Adhesive sweep: Sticks to the door bottom; easier to install but less durable
• Automatic sweep: Drops down when the door closes, lifts when it opens; best for high-traffic doors
• U-shaped sweep: Slides over the door bottom; no screws needed

Step-by-Step Installation (Screw-On Type)

Step 1: Measure the Door Width

Measure the width of the door at the bottom. Standard interior doors are 30–36" wide. If the sweep is longer than the door, mark the excess and cut with a hacksaw or tin snips.

Step 2: Determine the Correct Height

Close the door and slide the sweep into position. The rubber or brush seal should lightly touch the floor or threshold — not drag heavily (which causes wear) and not leave a gap (which defeats the purpose). Mark the screw hole positions with a pencil.

Step 3: Pre-Drill Pilot Holes (Optional)

For wood doors, pre-drilling prevents splitting. Use a drill bit slightly smaller than the screw diameter.

Step 4: Attach the Sweep

Hold the sweep in position and drive the screws in firmly. Don't overtighten — snug is enough. Check that the sweep is level across the full width.

Step 5: Test the Seal

Open and close the door several times. The sweep should brush lightly against the floor with no dragging resistance. Close the door and check for light gaps underneath — none should be visible.

Tips for a Perfect Installation

• Install on the interior face of the door for interior doors
• Install on the exterior face for exterior doors (so it seals against the threshold)
• If the floor is uneven, choose a brush-type sweep that conforms to the surface
• For carpet, choose a sweep with a longer brush or a U-channel type
