How to Hang a Door Correctly

Hanging a door — lifting it into the frame and securing it on its hinges — is the most physically demanding part of door installation. With the right technique and a helper, it's straightforward. Here's exactly how to do it.

Before You Hang: Checklist

• Door is fitted to the correct size (1/8" clearance on each side and top, 3/8"–1/2" at bottom)
• Hinge mortises are cut in both the door and the frame
• Hinges are screwed to the door
• Frame is plumb and square
• A helper is available — doors are heavy and awkward alone

Step 1: Prepare the Frame Mortises

Make sure the hinge mortises in the frame are clean and the correct depth. The hinge leaf should sit flush with the frame surface — not proud (sticking out) and not recessed (too deep).

Step 2: Position the Door

With your helper, lift the door into the opening. Use shims or wedges under the door bottom to hold it at the correct height — you need 3/8"–1/2" clearance at the bottom. This frees both hands for aligning the hinges.

Step 3: Align the Top Hinge First

Align the top hinge leaf on the door with the top hinge mortise in the frame. This is the most critical alignment — get this right and the others follow naturally.

Step 4: Insert the Hinge Pins

Insert the top hinge pin first, tapping it down with a hammer until fully seated. Then align and insert the bottom hinge pin, then the middle pin. Always insert from the top down.

Step 5: Test the Swing

Remove the shims and swing the door open and closed. It should move freely with no binding. Check the gap is even on all sides — 1/8" at top and sides.

Step 6: Check Plumb

Hold a level against the door face. It should be perfectly plumb (vertical). If not, adjust by adding hinge shims or deepening mortises.

Step 7: Tighten All Hinge Screws

Once the door hangs correctly, tighten all hinge screws firmly. Use at least one 3" screw per hinge leaf to reach the wall stud for maximum strength.

Common Hanging Problems and Fixes

• Door binds at top latch corner → tighten or shim bottom hinge
• Door binds at bottom latch corner → tighten or shim top hinge
• Gap uneven on sides → add shims behind appropriate hinge
• Door not plumb → adjust hinge depth with shims or chisel
• Hinge pin won't seat → check mortise alignment, tap firmly with hammer
