How to Fix Scratched Hardwood Floor

Assess the Scratch First

Not all scratches are equal. The right repair depends on how deep the damage goes:

• Surface scuffs — only the finish is scratched, the wood itself is untouched
• Light scratches — through the finish and into the top layer of wood
• Deep scratches — gouges that penetrate significantly into the wood

Run your fingernail across the scratch. If your nail doesn't catch, it's a surface scuff. If it catches slightly, it's a light scratch. If it catches significantly or you can see raw wood, it's a deep scratch.
