How to Fix Low Water Pressure in the Shower
A weak shower is one of the most frustrating bathroom problems. The good news: low shower pressure is almost always caused by something simple that you can fix yourself. Here's how to diagnose and restore full pressure.
Step 1: Check If It's Just the Shower
Turn on other faucets in the house. If they all have low pressure, the problem is with your home's water supply — not the shower specifically. See our guide on How to Fix Low Water Pressure in the Whole House.
If only the shower has low pressure, the problem is localized. Continue below.
Cause 1: Clogged Shower Head Nozzles (Most Common)
Mineral deposits from hard water build up in the nozzle holes over time, restricting water flow.
Fix — Clean the shower head:
- Use the shower head cleaning brush set to clear each nozzle hole individually
- Or remove the shower head and soak it in white vinegar for 1–2 hours, then scrub and rinse
- Reinstall and test — pressure often improves dramatically after cleaning
Cause 2: Flow Restrictor
Most modern shower heads have a flow restrictor — a small plastic disc inside the inlet that limits water flow to conserve water. Removing it increases pressure significantly.
Fix:
- Remove the shower head
- Look inside the inlet for a small plastic disc with a hole in the center — this is the flow restrictor
- Use needle-nose pliers or a small screwdriver to remove it
- Reinstall the shower head and test
👉 Or replace with a high-pressure shower head that's designed for strong flow: AquaCare High Pressure 8-mode Handheld Shower Head
Cause 3: Partially Closed Shut-Off Valve
The shut-off valve for the shower (or the main supply valve) may not be fully open.
Fix: Locate the shut-off valve for the shower — usually behind an access panel in the wall or in the basement. Make sure it's fully open (counterclockwise).
Cause 4: Kinked or Corroded Shower Arm
The shower arm (the pipe coming out of the wall) can corrode internally, restricting flow.
Fix: Replace the shower arm — they unscrew counterclockwise and are inexpensive at any hardware store.
Cause 5: Faulty Pressure-Balancing Valve
Shower valves have a pressure-balancing cartridge that can wear out and restrict flow. If cleaning the head and removing the restrictor don't help, the cartridge may need replacement.
Quick Diagnosis
| Symptom | Likely Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Uneven spray pattern | Clogged nozzles | Clean shower head |
| Weak but even flow | Flow restrictor or closed valve | Remove restrictor or open valve |
| Low pressure in whole house | Supply issue | Check main valve or PRV |
Bottom Line
Fix low shower pressure by cleaning the nozzles first — it's the most common cause and takes 15 minutes. If that doesn't help, remove the flow restrictor or replace the shower head with a high-pressure model. Both fixes restore strong shower pressure immediately.
