Dent vs. Scratch: Know the Difference

A dent is a compression of the wood fibers — the wood is pushed down but not removed. A scratch cuts across the surface. This distinction matters because dents can sometimes be raised back up using moisture and heat, while scratches cannot.

Method 1: Steam Raising (Best for Solid Hardwood)

This method works on solid hardwood floors where the wood fibers are compressed but intact. It does not work on engineered hardwood or floors with a thick polyurethane finish.

1. Dampen a clean cloth and place it directly over the dent
2. Press a hot iron (medium-high heat, no steam setting) onto the cloth for 10–15 seconds
3. Lift the iron and cloth and check the dent — the steam drives moisture into the compressed fibers, causing them to swell back up
4. Repeat 2–3 times if needed, allowing the wood to cool between applications
5. Let the area dry completely (several hours) before assessing the result

Important: Never apply the iron directly to the wood or finished floor surface. Always use a damp cloth as a buffer.

Method 2: Wood Filler (Works on Any Hardwood)

If steam raising doesn't fully restore the surface, or if the dent is in engineered hardwood, fill it with wood filler:

1. Clean the dented area and let it dry completely
2. Apply Gorilla Wood Filler into the dent using a putty knife, slightly overfilling
3. Allow to dry fully — 30–60 minutes for shallow dents, longer for deep ones
4. Sand flush with 180–220 grit sandpaper in the direction of the grain
5. Wipe clean with a tack cloth
6. Apply matching stain if needed, then seal with polyurethane

Method 3: Combination Approach

For best results on deep dents in solid hardwood, use steam first to raise the wood as much as possible, then fill any remaining depression with wood filler. This minimizes the amount of filler needed and produces a more natural-looking repair.

Finishing the Repair

After filling and sanding, apply a thin coat of Minwax Water Based Polyurethane to seal the repair. Once cured, use Rejuvenate Professional Wood Floor Restorer over the section to blend the sheen with the surrounding floor.

Prevent Future Dents

• Add felt furniture pads under all furniture legs
