How to Fix Deep Scratch in Hardwood Floor

What Counts as a Deep Scratch?

A deep scratch is one that penetrates through the finish and significantly into the wood itself — you can feel it catch your fingernail and may see raw, unfinished wood at the bottom of the gouge. These require filling before any finish can be applied.

What You'll Need

• Gorilla Wood Filler
• Putty knife set
• Fine-grit sandpaper (180–220 grit)
• Matching wood stain (optional)
• Minwax Water Based Polyurethane
• Clean cloths

Step 1: Clean the Scratch

Remove any dirt, wax, or debris from the scratch. Use a hardwood floor cleaner and let the area dry completely before proceeding. Any moisture or contamination in the scratch will prevent the filler from bonding properly.

Step 2: Apply Wood Filler

Using a putty knife, press Gorilla Wood Filler firmly into the scratch, slightly overfilling it. Work the filler in the direction of the grain and make sure it fully fills the bottom of the gouge — air pockets will cause the repair to crack later.

For very deep scratches, apply in two layers: let the first layer dry and shrink, then apply a second layer to bring it flush.

Step 3: Let It Dry Completely

Drying time depends on depth — shallow fills take 30–60 minutes; deep fills may need 2–4 hours. Don't rush this step. The filler must be fully hard before sanding or it will pull out of the scratch.

Step 4: Sand Flush

Once dry, sand the filled area flush with the surrounding floor using 180–220 grit sandpaper. Sand in the direction of the wood grain only — cross-grain sanding will leave visible scratches in the finish around the repair. Wipe away all dust with a tack cloth.

Step 5: Stain to Match (If Needed)

If the wood filler color doesn't match your floor, apply a small amount of matching wood stain over the filled area. Test on an inconspicuous spot first. Let the stain dry fully before sealing.

Step 6: Seal with Polyurethane

Apply a thin coat of Minwax Water Based Polyurethane over the repaired area using a foam applicator or brush. Feather the edges to blend with the surrounding finish. Let dry and apply a second coat for durability.

Step 7: Buff and Blend

Once the polyurethane is fully cured (24–48 hours), apply Rejuvenate Professional Wood Floor Restorer over the entire floor section to unify the sheen and blend the repair into the surrounding finish.
