How to Fix Buckled Hardwood Floor

What Is Buckling?
Buckling is the most extreme form of hardwood floor moisture damage — boards lift completely off the subfloor, sometimes rising several inches. Unlike cupping (where only the edges rise) or warping (a gradual bend), buckling is a sudden, dramatic failure caused by the floor having no room to expand.
Buckling almost always follows a flooding event, major plumbing leak, or prolonged exposure to standing water.
Act Immediately
Buckled floors require fast action. The longer the wood stays wet, the more likely it is to develop mold, and the less likely it is to recover. Within the first 24–48 hours:
- Remove all standing water immediately using towels, a wet/dry vacuum, or a pump
- Remove furniture, rugs, and anything else on the floor
- Open windows and doors to maximize airflow
- Run dehumidifiers and fans continuously
Step 1: Measure Moisture Levels
Use a Digital Moisture Meter to assess how wet the floor and subfloor are. This tells you how severe the damage is and helps you track drying progress. Check readings daily.
Step 2: Remove Buckled Boards
Severely buckled boards that have lifted significantly off the subfloor usually cannot be saved and need to be removed to allow the subfloor to dry properly. Attempting to force them back down while wet will cause them to crack or split.
To remove buckled boards:
- Score along the edges with a utility knife to break the finish seal
- Use a pry bar carefully to lift the boards without damaging adjacent boards
- Set the removed boards aside in a dry, well-ventilated area — some may be reusable once fully dried
Step 3: Dry the Subfloor Completely
With the buckled boards removed, dry the subfloor thoroughly before installing any replacement boards. Use your moisture meter to confirm the subfloor reads below 12% before proceeding. This may take 1–3 weeks depending on the severity of the water exposure.
Step 4: Assess and Replace
Once dry, evaluate the removed boards:
- Boards that flattened out while drying — may be re-installable if they're not split or structurally compromised
- Boards that remain warped, split, or show mold — must be replaced
When installing replacement boards, use a pneumatic flooring nailer to secure them properly to the subfloor.
Step 5: Refinish the Repaired Area
After replacement boards are installed, sand the repaired section with an orbital sander to blend with the surrounding floor, then re-stain and seal with Minwax Water Based Polyurethane.
Prevent Future Buckling
- Install a moisture barrier under floors over concrete or crawlspaces
- Leave proper expansion gaps (3/4") around all walls and fixed objects during installation
- Maintain indoor humidity between 35–55%
- Address any plumbing leaks immediately
