How to Fix a Window That Is Swollen Shut

A window that swells shut in humid weather is a classic wood window problem. The wood absorbs moisture from the air and expands until it's too large for the frame. Here's how to fix it — and keep it from happening again.
Why Do Windows Swell Shut?
Wood is hygroscopic — it absorbs and releases moisture from the surrounding air. In humid conditions (summer, rainy seasons, near bathrooms or kitchens), wood fibers expand. A window that fits perfectly in dry winter conditions can swell by 1/8" or more in summer, making it impossible to open.
How to Confirm It's Swelling (Not Paint)
Score the paint line with a utility knife. If the window still won't open after scoring, swelling is the cause. If it opens after scoring, it was painted shut.
Step 1: Wait for a Dry Day
Work on the driest day possible. Wood shrinks as it dries, so the window will be at its loosest on a low-humidity day. If possible, run a dehumidifier near the window for a few hours before working on it.
Step 2: Identify the Binding Points
Try to move the sash slightly and feel where it's binding. Common spots are the top and sides. Mark the contact points with a pencil.
Step 3: Sand the Binding Edges
For minor swelling, sand the marked areas with medium-grit sandpaper. Work in small amounts and test frequently — you want the window to close with light resistance on a humid day, not freely.

Step 4: Plane for Significant Swelling
If sanding isn't enough, use a hand plane to remove more material. Remove the sash from the frame if possible for better access and control.

Step 5: Seal All Bare Wood — Critical Step
This is the step most people skip — and why the problem keeps coming back. After sanding or planing, apply primer and paint to all bare wood surfaces immediately. Sealed wood absorbs far less moisture and swells much less.
Step 6: Lubricate the Channels
After sealing, apply silicone lubricant to the window channels. This reduces friction and makes the window easier to operate even if slight swelling occurs.

How Much to Remove
Remove only enough material so the window closes with light resistance on a humid day. If you remove too much, you'll have gaps in dry weather that let in drafts and noise.
Long-Term Prevention
- Keep all window surfaces painted or sealed — bare wood swells most
- Ensure good ventilation in rooms with high humidity
- Consider a dehumidifier in particularly humid rooms
- Inspect and repaint window sashes every 3–5 years
