How to Fix a Window That Is Foggy Between Panes

Foggy or hazy double-pane windows are a sign that the sealed unit has failed. The fog is moisture trapped between the two panes of glass. Here's what causes it, what you can do about it, and when replacement is the only real fix.

Why Is My Double-Pane Window Foggy?

Double-pane (insulated glass unit or IGU) windows have a hermetically sealed space between the two panes, filled with air or argon gas. When the seal fails, outside air — carrying moisture — enters the space. As temperatures change, the moisture condenses on the inner glass surfaces, creating the foggy appearance.

The seal fails due to: age (most IGU seals last 10–20 years), thermal expansion and contraction cycles, UV degradation of the sealant, or physical damage to the frame.

Can It Be Fixed Without Replacing the Glass?

Honestly — not permanently. The fog is caused by a failed seal, and the only true fix is replacing the insulated glass unit. However, there are temporary measures that can reduce the appearance of fogging.

Temporary Fix: Defogging Service

Some companies offer a "defogging" service where they drill small holes in the glass, inject a cleaning solution, and install vents. This can temporarily clear the fog but doesn't restore the insulating gas or the seal. The fog typically returns within a few years.

Permanent Fix Option 1: Replace the Glass Unit (IGU)

The most cost-effective permanent fix. A glazier can remove the failed IGU and install a new one in the existing frame. This costs significantly less than replacing the entire window and restores full insulating performance.

Permanent Fix Option 2: Replace the Entire Window

If the frame is also damaged, rotted, or outdated, replacing the entire window makes more sense. Modern windows have much better seal technology and longer-lasting IGUs.

How to Slow Future Seal Failure

  • Keep window frames painted and sealed to protect the IGU edge seal from UV and moisture
  • Ensure proper drainage from window sills — standing water accelerates seal failure
  • Avoid pressure washing directly at window seals
  • Repair any frame cracks promptly to prevent water infiltration at the seal

Does a Foggy Window Affect Energy Efficiency?

Yes, significantly. A failed IGU seal means the insulating gas (argon or krypton) has escaped and been replaced by regular air with moisture. The window's U-value (insulating performance) drops substantially, increasing heating and cooling costs.
