How to Fix a Window Screen That Won't Stay In

A window screen that keeps falling out is frustrating and defeats the purpose of having a screen. Here's why it happens and how to fix it so the screen stays securely in place.

Why Won't My Window Screen Stay In?

• Worn or missing screen clips/tabs: The plastic or metal clips that hold the screen in the frame channel have broken or fallen off
• Bent screen frame: The frame no longer fits snugly in the window channel
• Screen is too small: The screen has shrunk (mesh tightened) or the wrong size was installed
• Window channel is worn or damaged: The groove the screen sits in has worn smooth
• Screen spline is loose: The rubber cord holding the mesh in the frame has come out, making the frame loose

Fix 1: Replace Broken Screen Clips or Tabs

Most window screens are held in place by small plastic or metal clips, tabs, or plunger pins at the corners or sides. If these are broken or missing, the screen will fall out. Replacement clips are available at hardware stores by window brand.

Fix 2: Add Foam Tape to the Frame

Apply a thin strip of foam weatherstripping tape to the outer edge of the screen frame. This adds thickness and creates friction against the window channel, holding the screen more securely.

Fix 3: Straighten a Bent Frame

Fix 4: Re-Spline the Screen

If the rubber spline (the cord that holds the mesh in the frame groove) has come loose or shrunk, the mesh becomes slack and the frame loses its rigidity. Re-spline the screen with new spline cord.

Fix 5: Install a Screen Retainer or Security Screen Lock

For screens that keep falling out despite other fixes, install a screen retainer clip or security lock that positively locks the screen into the window frame. These are available at hardware stores.

Fix 6: Replace the Screen

If the frame is too bent or the clips are too damaged to repair, replacing the entire screen with a correctly sized unit is the most reliable fix.

Checking Screen Fit

A properly fitting screen should: snap into place with light pressure, have no visible gaps around the perimeter, and require deliberate effort to remove. If it falls out with a light push, the fit is wrong.
