How to Fix a Window Screen That Is Loose

A loose window screen rattles in the wind, has gaps that let in insects, and looks sloppy. The fix is usually quick and inexpensive. Here's how to tighten a loose screen and keep it that way.

Why Is My Window Screen Loose?

Loose or worn spline: The rubber cord holding the mesh in the frame groove has shrunk or come out, making the mesh sag
Frame too small for the window: Wrong size screen installed, or frame has contracted
Worn window channel: The groove the screen sits in has worn smooth and no longer grips the frame
Bent frame: The frame doesn't sit squarely in the channel
Missing or worn clips: The retention clips have failed

Fix 1: Re-Spline the Screen (Most Common Fix)

A loose, sagging mesh is almost always caused by a loose or shrunken spline. Re-splining tightens the mesh and restores the frame's rigidity.

Remove the screen from the window
Pry out the old spline with a flathead screwdriver — start at a corner
Pull out the old mesh
Cut new mesh 2" larger than the frame on all sides
Lay the mesh over the frame and use the spline roller to press new spline and mesh into the groove, starting at one corner
Keep the mesh taut as you work around all four sides
Trim excess mesh with a utility knife

Fix 2: Add Foam Tape to the Frame Edges

If the screen frame is slightly too small for the window channel, adding foam tape to the frame edges builds up the thickness and creates a snug fit.

Fix 3: Straighten the Frame

A bent frame won't sit squarely in the channel and will always feel loose. Lay the screen on a flat surface and gently straighten any bends before reinstalling.

Fix 4: Replace Worn Clips

If the retention clips are worn or missing, replace them. Clips are available at hardware stores by window brand and type.

Fix 5: Replace the Screen

If the frame is too damaged or too small to fix, replace the entire screen with a correctly sized unit.

Testing the Fix

After any repair, reinstall the screen and push on it firmly from the outside. It should flex slightly but not pop out. Shake the window frame — the screen should not rattle. If it does, add more foam tape or check the clips.
