How to Fix a Window Screen That Is Bent

A bent window screen frame doesn't fit properly in the window, leaves gaps for insects, and looks unsightly. Here's how to straighten a bent screen frame — and when to replace it.

Why Do Screen Frames Bend?

• Impact from a ball, branch, or other object
• Being stored improperly (stacked under heavy items)
• Forced removal or installation
• Wind pressure on a large screen
• Age and metal fatigue on older aluminum frames

Assess the Damage First

Remove the screen from the window and lay it on a flat surface. Check:

• Is the bend in the frame only, or is the mesh also damaged?
• Is the bend at a corner or along a rail?
• Is the frame cracked or just bent?

A bent-but-intact frame can often be straightened. A cracked frame needs replacement.

Fix 1: Straighten a Bent Rail

For a bow or bend along one of the four rails (not at a corner):

1. Lay the screen flat on a hard, level surface
2. Place a straight board along the bent rail
3. Apply firm, even pressure to push the rail back to flat
4. For aluminum frames, gentle hand pressure is usually enough for minor bends
5. For more significant bends, use a rubber mallet to tap the rail flat — never use a metal hammer directly on the frame

Fix 2: Straighten a Bent Corner

Corner bends are trickier because the corner connector (a plastic or metal piece inside the frame) may have shifted:

1. Gently work the corner back toward square by hand
2. Check with a carpenter's square
3. If the corner connector has popped out, push it back in and tap the frame rails together firmly

Fix 3: Replace the Frame Rail

If a rail is severely bent or cracked, individual frame rails can be purchased at hardware stores. The mesh and spline are transferred to the new rail. This requires removing the spline, sliding out the damaged rail, inserting the new one, and re-splineing.
