How to Fix a Window Screen That Has a Hole

A hole in a window screen lets in mosquitoes, flies, and other insects. The good news: small holes are one of the easiest home repairs you can make — no tools required for the simplest fix. Here's how to patch a screen hole based on its size.

Assess the Hole Size First

Under 1/4": Dab of clear nail polish or super glue — done in 30 seconds
1/4" to 3": Self-adhesive screen repair patch — 5 minutes
Over 3": Replace the entire screen mesh

Fix 1: Nail Polish or Clear Glue (Tiny Holes)

For pinholes and very small holes, apply a dab of clear nail polish or clear super glue directly over the hole. Let dry completely. This seals the hole invisibly and keeps insects out.

Fix 2: Self-Adhesive Screen Repair Tape (Small to Medium Holes)

The fastest fix for holes up to 3". Cut a piece of repair tape larger than the hole, peel the backing, and press firmly over the hole on both sides of the screen. The adhesive bonds to the mesh and creates an insect-proof patch.

Fix 3: Screen Patch Kit (Medium Holes)

For holes 1–3", a woven fiberglass patch can be woven into the existing mesh for a nearly invisible repair:

Cut a patch from replacement screen mesh, 1" larger than the hole on all sides
Unravel the edges of the patch by about 1/2" to create wire "fingers"
Push the fingers through the existing screen around the hole
Bend the fingers flat against the back of the screen to hold the patch in place

Fix 4: Replace the Full Screen (Large Holes)

Prevention Tips

Remove screens before using window cleaning tools that could puncture the mesh
Keep pets away from screens — cat claws are the #1 cause of screen holes
Store screens flat or vertically — never stack heavy items on them
