How to Fix a Squeaky Door Hinge

A squeaky door hinge is one of the easiest home repairs you'll ever make. Whether it's a light creak or a loud groan, here's exactly how to silence it for good.

What Makes a Door Hinge Squeak?

The squeak comes from metal-on-metal friction between the hinge pin and the hinge knuckles. This friction increases when:

• Surface rust has formed on the pin or knuckles
• Paint has seeped into the knuckle gaps
• The pin is slightly bent or worn oval
• The hinge is under stress from a misaligned door
