How to Fix a Door That Won't Stay Open

A door that swings closed on its own is more than an inconvenience — it can be a safety hazard, especially in busy households. Here's why it happens and how to fix it.

Why Won't My Door Stay Open?

A door that won't stay open is almost always caused by one of these issues:

• Out-of-plumb door frame: If the frame leans slightly, gravity pulls the door closed
• Self-closing hinges: Spring hinges or hydraulic hinges are designed to close the door automatically
• Hinge pin bent: A bent hinge pin creates tension that pulls the door closed

Step 1: Check if the Frame Is Plumb

Use a level on the door frame. If the frame leans even slightly toward the closed position, gravity will pull the door shut. This is the most common cause in older homes.

Step 2: Bend the Hinge Pin

This is the classic DIY trick. Remove one hinge pin, place it on a hard surface, and give it a very slight bend with a hammer — just 1–2mm. Reinstall it. The slight friction created will hold the door in any position.

Note: Don't bend it too much or the hinge will be hard to operate.
