How to Fix a Door That Won't Stay Closed

A door that won't stay closed is a privacy, security, and energy efficiency problem. Whether it pops open on its own or just won't latch, here's how to diagnose and fix it.

Why Won't My Door Stay Closed?

• Misaligned strike plate: The latch bolt isn't catching in the strike plate hole

Step 1: Test the Latch

Push the door closed without turning the knob. Does it stay? If yes, the latch is working but the door is being pushed open by gravity or air pressure. If no, the latch isn't engaging the strike plate.

Step 2: Fix the Strike Plate Alignment

Apply lipstick or chalk to the latch bolt, close the door, and check where it marks the strike plate. If the latch is hitting above, below, or beside the hole, reposition the strike plate or file the opening larger.

Step 3: Replace a Worn Latch

If the latch bolt doesn't spring back firmly, the mechanism is worn. Replace the latch assembly.

Step 4: Tighten Loose Hinges

Loose hinges let the door shift so the latch misses the strike plate. Tighten all hinge screws firmly. Use longer 3" screws that reach the wall stud for a much stronger hold.

Step 5: Fix an Out-of-Plumb Frame

Check the frame with a level. If it leans toward the open position, the door will always drift open. Options include shimming the hinges to compensate, or bending a hinge pin slightly to add friction.
