How to Fix a Door That Won't Latch

When a door won't latch, it won't stay closed — which is a security and privacy problem. The good news is that most latch issues are simple to diagnose and fix yourself in under 30 minutes.

Why Won't My Door Latch?

The latch bolt needs to align perfectly with the strike plate hole to engage. If the door has shifted, the frame has settled, or the hardware has worn, that alignment is lost. Common causes include: misaligned strike plate, loose hinges, swollen wood, or a worn latch mechanism.

Step 1: Find the Misalignment

Apply lipstick or chalk to the latch bolt, then close the door gently. The mark left on the strike plate shows exactly where the latch is hitting. If it's hitting above, below, or to the side of the hole, you know which direction to adjust.

Step 2: Adjust or Reposition the Strike Plate

This is the most common fix. Loosen the strike plate screws and shift the plate in the direction needed. If the gap is small (under 1/8"), use a metal file to enlarge the strike plate opening instead of moving the whole plate.

Step 3: Tighten Loose Hinges

Loose hinges let the door sag, pulling the latch out of alignment. Tighten all hinge screws. For stripped holes, insert wooden toothpicks with wood glue, let cure, then re-drive the screws.
