How to Fix a Door That Swings Closed by Itself

A door that swings closed on its own can be frustrating — especially when you need it to stay open. This is a very common problem with a handful of reliable fixes.

Why Does My Door Swing Closed by Itself?

Step 1: Check for Self-Closing Hinges

Look at your hinges. Spring hinges have a visible coil spring inside. If you have spring hinges and don't want self-closing behavior, replace them with standard hinges.

Step 2: Check Frame Plumb

Hold a level against the hinge-side frame. If it leans toward the closed position, gravity is closing the door. Even a small lean is enough.

Step 3: Bend a Hinge Pin to Add Friction

Remove one hinge pin and give it a very slight bend — just 1–2mm. Reinstall. The added friction will hold the door at any position, preventing it from swinging closed on its own.
