How to Fix a Door That Sticks at Top

When a door sticks at the top, it usually drags or binds in the upper corner of the frame. This is one of the most common door problems and almost always has a straightforward DIY fix.

Why Does a Door Stick at the Top?

Top-corner sticking is typically caused by one of these issues:

• Loose bottom hinge: When the bottom hinge sags, the door tilts and the top latch corner rises into the frame
• Wood swelling: Humidity causes the top of the door to expand and press against the frame
• Paint buildup: Multiple paint layers on the top edge create friction
• Settled frame: The door frame has shifted out of square over time

Step 1: Check the Bottom Hinge First
