How to Fix a Door That Squeaks

How to Fix a Door That Squeaks

A squeaky door is one of the most common and easiest home repairs you can make. In most cases, a few minutes and a can of lubricant is all you need. Here's everything you need to know.

Why Does My Door Squeak?

Squeaking is caused by metal-on-metal friction in the hinges. This happens when:

  • The hinge pins are dry and lack lubrication
  • The hinges have surface rust or corrosion
  • The hinge pins are slightly bent or worn
  • Paint has gotten into the hinge knuckles
  • The door has shifted and the hinges are under stress

Step 1: Identify Which Hinge Is Squeaking

Open and close the door slowly while listening carefully. Have someone watch the hinges while you move the door. Usually one hinge is the culprit. Mark it with a piece of tape.

Step 2: Apply Lubricant to the Hinge Pin

This is the fastest fix. Spray lubricant directly onto the hinge pin and knuckles while moving the door back and forth to work it in.

Step 3: Remove and Clean the Hinge Pin

For persistent squeaks, remove the hinge pin completely. Tap it out from the bottom using a screwdriver and hammer. Clean off any rust or paint with steel wool or sandpaper, then coat with lubricant before reinstalling.

Step 4: Replace the Hinge Pin

If the pin is bent, corroded, or worn, replace it. Hinge pins are inexpensive and easy to swap.

Step 5: Use Household Alternatives

No lubricant on hand? These household items work in a pinch:

  • Petroleum jelly (Vaseline): Coat the pin before reinserting
  • Bar soap or candle wax: Rub on the pin and knuckles
  • Olive oil or cooking oil: Apply with a cotton swab (temporary fix)
  • Lip balm: Works surprisingly well for light squeaks

Step 6: Check Hinge Screws

If the hinge is loose, the door shifts under load and creates stress-squeaks. Tighten all hinge screws after lubricating.

Prevention Tips

  • Lubricate all door hinges once a year as part of home maintenance
  • Use silicone spray rather than WD-40 for longer-lasting results
  • Keep paint out of hinge knuckles when painting doors
