How to Fix a Door That Lets in Noise

A door that lets in noise is a problem for bedrooms, home offices, nurseries, and anyone who values quiet. The good news: most noise comes through gaps, not through the door itself — and gaps are easy to seal. Here's how to soundproof your door effectively.
Why Does Noise Come Through My Door?
Sound travels through air gaps much more easily than through solid materials. Even a 1% gap around a door can let through 50% of the noise. The priority is always sealing the gaps first before considering door replacement.
Step 1: Seal the Bottom Gap (Biggest Impact)
The gap under the door is the largest sound pathway. A door sweep dramatically reduces noise transmission.

Step 2: Weatherstrip All Four Sides

Understanding STC Ratings
Sound Transmission Class (STC) measures how well a door blocks sound:
- STC 20–25: Hollow-core interior door (normal speech clearly audible)
- STC 28–32: Solid-core door (normal speech audible but not intelligible)
- STC 35+: Specialty acoustic door (speech barely audible)
Sealing gaps can improve effective STC by 5–10 points — often more impactful than replacing the door.

- Apply weatherstripping to all three frame sides
- Fix door alignment so it sits flush
