How to Fix a Door That Has a Gap on the Side
Share
A gap on the side of a door — either the hinge side or the latch side — lets in drafts, noise, and light. It also signals an alignment or weatherstripping issue that needs attention. Here's how to fix it.
Which Side Has the Gap?
The fix depends on which side the gap is on:
- Latch side gap: The door doesn't reach the door stop on the lock side
- Hinge side gap: The door pulls away from the frame near the hinges
- Both sides: The door is too narrow for the frame, or the frame has expanded
Latch Side Gap — Causes and Fixes
Cause 1: Hinges set too deep
If the hinge mortises are too deep, the door is pulled toward the hinge side, creating a gap on the latch side. Add shims behind the hinges to push the door toward the latch side.
- Door Hinge Shims 10-Pack (0.040") — add behind hinge leaves to adjust door position
Cause 2: Door has shrunk
In very dry conditions, wood can shrink and create gaps. Add weatherstripping to the door stop on the latch side to fill the gap.
- Foam Weather Stripping Seal Tape 16ft (1/2" x 1/4") — self-adhesive, apply to door stop to fill the gap
Hinge Side Gap — Causes and Fixes
Cause 1: Hinges not mortised deep enough
If the hinges sit proud of the frame, the door is pushed away from the hinge side. Deepen the mortise with a chisel.

Cause 2: Door has warped
A warped door pulls away from the hinge side frame. Add a middle hinge to pull the door flat, or replace the door if the warp is severe.
General Fix: Add Weatherstripping to the Door Stop
For gaps under 1/4" on either side, adding weatherstripping to the door stop is the fastest fix. It compresses when the door closes and seals the gap.
- Foam Weather Stripping Seal Tape 16ft — apply to the door stop on the gapped side
Check Frame Squareness
A racked frame creates uneven side gaps — large at one corner, small at the other. Use a carpenter's square to check.

Quick Diagnosis
- Latch side gap, hinges tight → add hinge shims or weatherstripping to door stop
- Hinge side gap → deepen hinge mortise or add middle hinge for warp
- Gap on both sides → door has shrunk, add weatherstripping to both door stops
- Diagonal gap → frame is racked, needs professional assessment
