How to Fix a Door Knob That Won't Turn

A door knob that won't turn is frustrating — and potentially dangerous if it traps you in a room. Here's how to diagnose the cause and fix it quickly.

Why Won't My Door Knob Turn?

• Seized or dry mechanism: The internal parts need lubrication
• Broken internal spring: The return spring has snapped and the knob won't retract
• Latch bolt jammed: The latch is stuck in the extended position
• Spindle disconnected: The square spindle has slipped out of the mechanism
• Lock engaged: The privacy lock button is pressed in and forgotten
• Worn or broken mechanism: Internal parts have failed from age or heavy use

Step 1: Check the Privacy Lock

On bathroom and bedroom knobs, check if the privacy lock button on the inside knob is pressed in. If so, use a small flathead screwdriver or coin to turn the slot on the outside knob to unlock it.

Step 2: Lubricate the Mechanism

Spray lubricant into the latch mechanism through the latch bolt opening on the door edge. Work the knob back and forth to distribute the lubricant.

Step 3: Check the Spindle
