How to Fix a Door Hinge That Is Loose
Share
A loose door hinge causes the door to sag, stick, squeak, and fail to latch properly. It's one of the most common door problems — and one of the easiest to fix. Here's how to do it right.
Why Do Door Hinges Come Loose?
- Stripped screw holes: The wood around the screws has worn away and can no longer grip
- Wrong screw length: Short screws only grip the door casing, not the structural framing
- Wood shrinkage: Seasonal wood movement loosens screws over time
- Heavy door: A heavy door puts constant stress on hinge screws
- Frequent use: High-traffic doors loosen faster
Step 1: Tighten the Existing Screws
Start simple. Use a screwdriver to tighten every screw in the loose hinge. If the screws tighten firmly and the hinge feels solid, you're done. Test the door.
Step 2: Fix Stripped Screw Holes (Toothpick Method)
If screws spin without gripping, the holes are stripped. This is the most common scenario and has a simple fix:
- Remove the loose screws
- Dip wooden toothpicks in wood glue
- Pack them into the stripped hole until full
- Break off flush with the surface
- Let the glue cure for at least 1 hour (overnight is better)
- Re-drive the original screws — they'll grip the new wood fibers
Step 3: Use Longer Screws
Replace the standard 3/4" hinge screws with 3" screws that reach through the door casing and into the wall stud. This is the strongest fix and prevents future loosening. Use at least one long screw per hinge leaf.
Step 4: Add Hinge Shims if Needed
If the hinge mortise has worn or the hinge leaf is sitting proud of the frame, add a thin shim behind the hinge to restore proper alignment.

Step 5: Replace the Hinge
If the hinge leaf itself is bent, cracked, or the knuckles are worn, replace the entire hinge. Match the size (typically 3.5" for interior doors) and finish.

Step 6: Replace the Hinge Pin
If the hinge body is fine but the pin is worn or bent, just replace the pin.

Signs a Hinge Is Loose
- Door sags or drops when opened
- Door sticks at the top latch corner
- Hinge screws are visible gaps between hinge leaf and frame
- Door squeaks under load
- Latch no longer aligns with strike plate
Prevention
Use 3" screws from the start when hanging doors. Check and tighten hinge screws annually. Avoid slamming doors, which accelerates screw loosening.
