How to Fix a Door Frame That Is Out of Square

A door frame that's out of square causes the door to stick, have uneven gaps, fail to latch, or swing on its own. It's one of the most common causes of persistent door problems — and it's fixable without replacing the frame. Here's how.

How to Tell If Your Frame Is Out of Square

Measuring Out-of-Square

Measure diagonally from the top-left corner to the bottom-right corner, then from the top-right to the bottom-left. If the measurements differ by more than 1/8", the frame is out of square. The difference tells you how much correction is needed.

Cause 1: Foundation Settlement

The most common cause in older homes. The house has settled unevenly, racking the frame. This is a structural issue — the frame fix is a workaround, not a cure.

Cause 2: Shims Have Shifted

The shims behind the jambs have compressed or fallen out over time, letting the frame move.

Cause 3: Fasteners Have Failed

The nails or screws holding the jamb to the rough framing have loosened.

Fix 1: Re-Shim the Frame (Most Common Fix)

1. Remove the door casing (trim) on the affected side
2. Locate the existing shims behind the jamb
3. Add or adjust shims to push the jamb back into square
4. Check with a carpenter's square and level after each adjustment
5. Re-nail the jamb through the shims into the rough framing
6. Replace the casing

Fix 2: Add a Diagonal Brace

For frames that keep racking, add a temporary diagonal brace across the opening while you work, then shim and fasten permanently.

Fix 3: Plane the Door to Match the Frame

If the frame is only slightly out of square and re-shimming isn't practical, plane the door to match the frame's actual shape. This is a workaround — the door will fit the out-of-square frame but won't be perfectly rectangular.

Fix 4: Replace the Frame

If the frame is severely out of square and the rough framing has shifted, the only permanent fix is to remove the frame, correct the rough opening, and install a new frame.

After Fixing: Check Everything

• Check jambs plumb with level
• Check head jamb level
• Hang the door and verify even gaps on all sides
