How to Fix a Broken Sofa Leg

How to Fix a Broken Sofa Leg

A broken sofa leg doesn't mean you need a new sofa. Whether the leg snapped off completely, cracked, or the mounting hardware failed, this is a very fixable repair that takes less than an hour. Here's how to assess the damage and fix it properly.

What You'll Need

Step 1: Assess the Damage

There are three common types of sofa leg damage, each with a different fix:

  • Leg snapped off at the base: The leg broke at the point where it attaches to the sofa frame.
  • Leg cracked but still attached: The leg has a crack or split but hasn't fully separated.
  • Mounting hardware failed: The hanger bolt or mounting plate stripped or broke, causing the leg to wobble or fall off.

Fix 1: Reattach a Snapped-Off Leg

If the break is clean, apply Titebond wood glue to both surfaces, press firmly together, and clamp with bar clamps for at least 24 hours. For extra strength, drill a hole through the break point and insert a dowel pin coated in wood glue before clamping. This creates a mechanical joint that's often stronger than the original.

Fix 2: Repair a Cracked Leg

Work Titebond wood glue into the crack with a thin tool (a putty knife or toothpick works well). Clamp firmly and wipe away excess glue immediately. Once cured, fill any remaining gaps with Gorilla Wood Filler, sand smooth, and touch up with a wood repair marker to match the finish.

Fix 3: Replace the Mounting Hardware

Most sofa legs attach via a hanger bolt (a bolt with wood screw threads on one end and machine screw threads on the other) screwed into a mounting plate on the sofa frame. If the hanger bolt has stripped out of the leg, fill the hole with wood glue and a toothpick, let cure, then re-drill and install a new hanger bolt. If the mounting plate is damaged, replace it with a new furniture leg mounting plate — screw it to the sofa frame and attach the leg.

Fix 4: Replace the Leg Entirely

If the leg is beyond repair, replacement legs are widely available online in many styles and heights. Use the mounting plate set to attach the new leg securely to the sofa frame.

Pro Tips

  • Always repair all legs at the same time if any are showing wear — a sofa with mismatched leg conditions will develop problems quickly.
  • Add felt pads to the bottom of all legs after repair to protect your floors and reduce stress on the leg joints.
  • For heavy sofas, use a mounting plate with at least 4 screws for maximum holding strength.
  • Touch up any finish damage with a wood repair marker for an invisible repair.
