How to Convert a Garage to Living Space

Converting a garage into living space is one of the most cost-effective ways to add square footage to your home. Check Zoning and Permits

Install vapor barrier over the concrete slab to prevent moisture migration. Build a wood subfloor on pressure-treated sleepers to raise the floor level and provide a nailing surface for flooring. Install LVP flooring over the subfloor — it's waterproof and handles the temperature fluctuations common in garages.

Step 3: Insulate the Walls and Ceiling

Garage walls are typically uninsulated. Frame interior walls in front of the existing garage walls and fill with insulation. Insulate the ceiling between the ceiling joists. Garages are notoriously poorly insulated — proper insulation is essential for comfort and energy efficiency.

Step 4: Rough-In Electrical and HVAC

Have a licensed electrician add circuits for outlets, lighting, and any appliances. Extend the home's HVAC system to the converted space, or install a mini-split system for independent heating and cooling. A mini-split is often the most practical solution for garage conversions.

Step 5: Install Drywall

Hang drywall on all walls and the ceiling. Tape, mud, and sand all joints smooth. Use the drywall repair kit for small patches.

Step 6: Install Flooring, Trim, and Paint

Install LVP flooring using the NAACOO installation kit. Install baseboard molding with the miter saw and brad nailer. Fill nail holes with BONCART wood filler. Caulk all gaps with GE silicone caulk. Paint walls and ceiling.
